“‘Fatality units’?” He looked at the device with renewed interest. Rigged out of what appeared to be a collection of spare parts, it quite literally had all the bells and whistles of any scientific sensor. It had lights, too. Benny was reminded of the tricorders from the original Star Trek series, but did not say so. Instead, he grinned, glancing up at the scientist. “Probably shouldn’t ask why you need it, should I?”
Pulling his hands out of his pockets, the engineer shoved his sleeves up past his elbows, revealing surprisingly thin wrists and arms, gesturing to the device. “Can I see?”
° ;; “Be my guest.”
[ He wouldn’t exactly be wrong in the sense of the device
being model after the tricorder because it completely was.
No one ever seemed to say ( much) about it.
Carlos was still excited to share his work with someone interested though.
Carefully, he handed off the piece of equipment to the other. ]
"Well, I’d be more than happy to explain
why I need it if you really wanted to know.“
“A motel. Cool.” Benny fell into step beside the man, jamming his hands into his jean pockets, thumbs hooked into the belt loops. The too-long sleeves of his sweater brushed his knuckles. “Can you—” He looked around. “—show me where that might be?”
He thought better of it a moment later as his eye caught on the man’s device. “Or,” Benny said, drawing out the word, “or you could tell me what that blinky thing is, ‘cause it looks way cool.”
° ;; "This?“
[ The scientist took on a better natured tone at the interest in equipment.
It wasn’t often anymore that anyone outside of his team
or Cecil seemed to comment on these things.
A smile moves across his features as he extends the
device to the man, allowing him have a look at it. ]
"This measures the standard fatality units for the entire town.
Though, it’s only tuned it for roughly a block radius at the moment.”
[ And thankful, the dial rested at zero. ]
“Hey!” Benny had to break into a jog to catch up with the man. The lab coat had caught his eye from across the street, and though he might’ve stopped any number of other people, he was intent on talking to this one. “Hey, know of anywhere a guy could crash for the night in this town?”
° ;; [ His eyes tore away from the blinking device in hand to turn to the
voice vying for his attention instead. The scientist blinks in face of the
question, the proverbial wheels turning in search of an answer for him. ]
“Oh! Um I believe there’s a motel in town somewhere.”
